Labradors Are NOT For Dummies

This week Terrierman and RaisedByWolves post the snark on Sioux City, Iowa city councilman Aaron Rochester who thinks his short-coated, broad-headed dog should be exempt from dangerous dog laws even after its second documented attack on attacked an innocent person.  This – while he remains smugly entrenched in the belief that all short-coated, broad-headed dogs that don’t have papers saying they’re Labrador retrievers are born vicious and need to be killed.

Which dog would you rather have latched onto your back?  Councilman Rochester’s labbador who “is a great watchdog” or the born-to-be-vicious pibble show below?

H/T to BloggoTheDogBoy for posting this newsworthy video of a typically vicious pibble in action.

As the much maligned Cesar Millan says: “Breed is not destiny

    !

It saddens and frustrates me that so many refuse to take responsibility for their dogs’ AND children’s actions and safety. Yes. It’s not only a dog owner’s responsibility to maintain control of his/her dog at all times; it’s also a parent’s (or supervising adult’s) responsibility to make sure a dependent child is out of the contact zone of the dog.

Accountability and responsibility is difficult. It’s easier to put all blame on the dog or its breed. Our litigious society prefers this.

So many elected officials think that their position gives them privilege instead of responsibility.

    Love that vid!

As for the Councilman Rochesters for the world. . .what goes around, comes around. . .

This makes me sad for the Pitties, but also for the Labs. They both get bad reps — in the case of Labradors, it’s probably more the fault of the owner. Like this loser. (Although there are a lot of temperamentally unsound Labs, I suppose.) Pitties — well, it’s complicated, but not the dogs’ fault and often not the owner’s either…..it’s like a sociological fail.

20,000 Labs and Lab mixes are on Petfinder every single day I check. It boggles the mind.:(

Can you tell I have a black Lab/Pit mix?

You can’t blame a dog for being a dog, but the city councilman should not have let his dog out in the front yard without a leash. Now the poor dog will pay for his owner’s mistake with its life. KTIV Ch. 4 in Sioux City, IA has been playing videos of the yellow lab at home with the family & it looks like a friendly, loving pet–playing with the children. http://www.ktiv.com/global/video/flash/popupplayer.asp?ClipID1=3953694&h1=Decision%20is%20yet%20to%20come%20on%20Sioux%20City%20Councilman%27s%20dog&vt1=v&at1=undefined&d1=33034&LaunchPageAdTag=News&undefined&activePane=info&rnd=93269865

It probably was (like the councilman says) just trying to protect the little girl from the jogger. Heck, how was the dog supposed to know that the guy was running for exercise and not coming to attack his family? Now it’s up to some pound master–a retired police captain to decide the dog’s fate & on the news tonight he pretty much said that the law is clear. Looks like the dog’s death warrant has already been signed. Couldn’t they at least see if someone that lives in the country would take the dog? Stupid people making stupid laws!!!
