Tuesday Turtle

Hat tip to Jessica at Bioephemera for this from The Washington Post:

The hero of this little crime drama has a brain about the size of a raisin, so of course she has no idea what happened. She’s a reptile — but who cares? There’s a drug suspect in custody, so let’s credit her with the arrest.

Her name is Turtle No. 72.

And this is her story:

She is an Eastern box turtle, one of 135 counted by researchers in the park in recent years, and one of three puttering in the woods with tiny radio transmitters affixed to their shells so scientists can study their movements. Turtle No. 72, six inches long, roams an area of about 50 acres near the District-Maryland border, meandering no faster than a few hundred feet per hour on her three-inch legs.

As a rule, being a turtle, she minds her own business.

But in a scene that could have been taken from a GenX version of Tooter the Turtle (“Please Mr. Wizard, I want to be a narcotics dog”) WUSA9 reports:

A box turtle equipped with GPS helps police nab a suspect growing marijuana in Rock Creek Park.

Just south of the DC/Maryland line, a turtle wearing a GPS device for research purposes makes an amazing discovery.

“The ranger in charge of the program discovered the turtle in the middle of a marijuana field,” Sgt. Robert Lachance of the U.S. Park Police says.

The fellow cultivating the plot probably wishes Mr. Wizard had called No. 72 back before she’d filmed his little garden while carrying a GPS unit.  But no such luck…

Police say that culprit is 19 year old Isiah Johnson of Chevy Chase. He’s now in custody and will be extradited back DC to face drug charges.

“He felt like he had a layer of security, but he probably never counted on a turtle with a tracking device leading us to that location and finding the field.”

If you’re too young to know who Tooter the Turtle is, here’s a clip from YouTube that, appropriately, features his adventure as Tuesday Turtle – Private Eye:

We *heart* working turtles 😉
