An Error of Teutonic Proportions?

From our friend Chaz over at Southern Rockies Nature Blog:
“A German town wants DNA samples from all local dogs so it can fine owners when their pets foul public spaces.“
Because of course people, people who don’t pick up their dogs’ poop will not only voluntarily license their dogs but also submit DNA samples for testing.
“Unfortunately, we have to do it voluntarily because there is nothing in the constitution about a dog DNA databank being enforceable,” he said. “But we are proceeding and hope to log every pooch.
Good luck with that!

Entry filed under: dogs. Tags: dog poop, that was a really stupid idea.

Imagine the cost. And how would you feel if you were a CSI waiting on a human sample for law enforcement and were told that there’s a 3 week wait list because of the dog poop orders.
I imagine that if you ran the math on this you’d find that the cost of hiring a human pooper scooper would be
1 year human pooper scooper: $25,000
vs.
1 year human sample gatherer: $50,000 (requires training)
1 year test fees: $400,000
1 year salaray for officer to compare test fees to data base and issue warrants: $20,000
1 year data base management: $40,0000
1 year court costs: $150,000
minus: Average fine $100 x number of convictions.
And my guess is that roughly no one would be matched in the database, ever.

Must be my PA Dutch hertiage — this so sounds like something a German town would do! I can even see some of my relatives running the lab!
Efficiency will win out and the lab will be shelved — or they will have so much fun discovering things that it will go off into a different direction.
I love my relatives!

No, but seriously, folks, we used to joke about this a decade or so ago.
Is life imitating jokes?
Do I have to ask?

How hard is it for people to pick up their dog’s turds? I went for a walk recently and posted my findings here http://www.dontshitme.com.au, it’s really annoying that people let their dogs crap anywhere when there are so many other options. I’d like to link to your site too!

We love links! And if you look around a bit you’ll see that there are several articles on fecal miscreants here.
We love responsible dog owners
