Currently Posting From Guam (or was it Mongolia?)

August 9, 2008

It’s the weekend – an obscenely busy weekend.  Monday the manly-men come to gut my kitchen and laundry room in preparation for a major rehaul.  I’m so overwhelmed with the stuff I need to do that this comic from xkcd pretty much sums up what each morning feels like:

So, instead of torturing you with the kind of junk I’m currently capable of writing I’ll post some of the more interesting links I wasted time on came across surfing the web today.

Topping our list is a post that could have been taken from News of the Weird; Pet Connection’s story on the dog cloning woman’s possible past history as a beauty queen and rapist/kidnapper.  Yes Gina, you’re right; you really could not make this stuff up!

Next an ironic and, unfortunately, timely post from Pat the Terrierman on how to Get Rich Quick in the Puppy Rental Business.  With FlexPetz expanding their business across the country (now coming to Lincoln, NE according to my friend Jill) – I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.  Actually I do know – I weep for the merchandise dogs involved in this mess.

From McSweeney’s Internet Tendency: the FAQ For Dogs.  I want the T-shirt!

Forwarded from a friend in the UK, youtube video featuring what I *hope* is the Worst Police Dog in the World:

Considering this dog’s performance, perhaps we humans need to take over vital search operations?  After all, we can track smells “just like dogs do.”  From Neurophilosophy an interesting post and video clip about a study conducted at UC Berkeley (where else) on the chocolate tracking abilities of college students.

The sad, slow and frankly pathetic performance these college students displayed would embarass even the most uninspired lap dog.  Searching for chocoloate? Someone should have recruited a pack of premenstrual middle-aged women for this – THEY would have excelled.

Happy Saturday!

Good luck with your renos, the mess will be worth the result. You know that time estimates should usually be doubled and cost estimates – well, never mind.

That way, if the job comes in on time and within budget you’re doubly thrilled!

Don’t just weep for rental dogs–protect animals by passing legislation to stop the companies that pimp them. We did it in Boston and then passed a state law to keep them out of all of Massachusetts. And we did it without funds, slick publications or even a formal structure. We were grassroots-meet-cyberspace.

All of you who genuinely love animals can do this too too. And you must.

Not only is peddling dogs and cats like ZipCars cruel, it is a gateway attitude that will desensitize society over time, increasing tolerance for other forms of animal abuse. After all, these companies aggressively promote pets as disposable commodities. So do dog fighters.

Check out the Aug. 3 Doonesbury for an incisive take on this cruel trade.

Then call your state and municipal legislators. File legislation. Start a Coalition of armchair lobbyists linked by email. And stop a new form of abuse before it has a chance to mainstream.

    Just do it.

Flexpetz is wrong wrong wrong! I’ve been covering them extensively and the level of weirdness goes way beyond the basic business concept.

Fortunatley, they seem to be “shelving” the idea for the time being. Ploy to get media attention of their backs? Probably
